Elite Socialistas Wishes You A Happy Gift Card Exchange Day!
Hello Elite Shopalistas,
Cash in on Gift Card Exchange Day! Now that all the wrapping papers are officially in the recycle bin and those “long-lusted” after gifts are on display, what’s a girl to do with those gift cards for stores or services we really don’t need? 
Happily, you can now trade them for cash during Gift Card Exchange Day on Dec. 26, when resellers are paying the highest premiums of the year. Since gift cards were once again the most requested present for the holidays, many of those rectangle plastic pieces will go begging the day after Christmas.
According to the National Retail Foundation, 80 percent of consumers planned on buying at least one gift card this year. SmartMoney.com noted a TowerGroup prediction that total transactions would exceed $100 billion. Yet the same study also estimated lost value on gift cards would reach $2 billion this year.
“We wanted to create an opportunity for everyone to come out ahead,” said Gift Card Exchange Day Founder Luke Knowles. “With this event, we’re trying to ensure unwanted gift cards don’t wind up in the back of junk drawers until they expire.”
In essence, Gift Card Exchange Day responds to an all-too-common phenomenon. We harbor a tendency to buy gifts we’d like to receive, meaning vegetarians end up with gift cards for steak houses and non-readers get bookstore cards.
In honor of the event, here are five tips for getting the most out of your unwanted gift cards.
1. Don’t Wait
It’s easy to forget about unwanted cards after the tree is down, which is one reason the event is scheduled for the day after Christmas. As they say, “Out of sight is out of mind.”
2. Check Your Balance
Check your gift card balance on the Gift Card Exchange Day website. It’s not unknown for thieves to swipe card numbers off store racks, then use them to make purchases online. Checking your balance is a good way to make sure there’s actually money loaded on the card before you try to sell it.
3. Remember, It’s Easy
All you have to do is go to GiftCardExchangeDay.com, enter the merchant name, and click “Get Offers.” You’ll instantly receive bids from companies interested in buying your gift card. Many of these companies will also provide you with a pre-paid mailing label after you accept their offer.
4. Watch for the Best Price
Several resellers participate in the event, so you may get a variety of offers. Don’t be surprised by the return you’ll get on the card’s face value as this is the time of year when gift card resellers’ inventories are depleted and they’re trying to restock.
5. Buy What You Really Want

Elite Budgetistas Recession Proofs Their Holidays!

Today’s shoppers are currently trending creative budgeting this holiday season, according to data collected by WSL/Strategic Retail, the leading authority on shopper behavior and retail trends. A new survey from the company, Holiday Season 2011 Pulse of Shopping Life, reveals that while shoppers are unleashing the inner “Budgetista” for the holidays, a majority are still making self-purchases and using their holiday shopping savings to reward themselves.
“A tough economy has suppressed shoppers’ holiday spending plans this season,” said Wendy Liebmann, CEO of WSL/Strategic Retail. “In an effort to recession proof their gift lists, shoppers are using up rewards points and gift cards, purchasing a little each week, and resisting the temptation of stores where they tend to overspend.”
Candace Corlett, President of WSL/Strategic Retail continued: “Interestingly, while shoppers are using smart budgeting techniques to buy for others, they are also “self-gifting” particularly in the categories of clothing, electronics and books. Shoppers have creatively managed to save more on others, and are now rewarding themselves and taking advantage of the great holiday sales to buy things for themselves that they had been putting off.”
Significant findings of the report include:
· Resisting temptation. To manage holiday spending this year, shoppers are resisting the usual temptations, with 35% avoiding stores where they are tempted to overspend, while 23% stick to buying affordable brands, and 18% are making fewer trips to stay out of the stores.
· Finding new Internet inroads. The Internet is making different kinds of inroads with holiday gift givers bidding for items on eBay or other online auction sites (10%), using smartphones to help them shop (8%), buying deals on discount sites like “LivingSocial” or “Groupon” (7%), or checking for deals on their social networks or mobile device (5%).
· Using up rewards points. The power of rewards points is stunning, as nearly 30% are using them to buy gifts this season.
· Tracking spending with gift cards. Shoppers (30%) are purchasing gift cards as a way to limit how much they spend on a gift.
· Paying-as-they-go. Shoppers (30%) are also practicing a pay-as-you-go method, buying a little each week before December 25th.
A tough economy has suppressed holiday shoppers’ spending mindsets this season. Yet, after a long year of being a smart/frugal shopper and practicing creative budgeting tactics to ensure smiles on their giftees’ faces, they are even treating themselves with a few gifts.
· Self-Gifting. While shopping for others this holiday season, 66% plan to buy something for themselves.
- For women, the top categories for self-purchases include clothing (44%), beauty (25%), books (paper or digital) (23%), and electronics (18%).
- For men, the top categories for self-purchases include electronics (34%), clothing (27%), alcoholic beverages (23%) and paper or digital books (17%).
